چکیده

Several recent publications have shown that joint sourcechannel decoding (JSCD) could be a powerful technique for taking advantage of residual source redundancy. Furthermore, it appeared that the principle could also be successfully applied to variable length codes (VLCs). This paper gives an in-depth analysis of a new method recently proposed in [1], [2] to provide a low complexity soft decoding of VLCs with and without channel coding. Furthermore we also present new results obtained in a video coding context, using a VLC table from the MPEG4 video standard. Compared to separated decoding systems, the gain in signal to noise ratio varies from 0.3 dB up to 2 dB.

Joint Source-Channel Decoding of Variable-Length Codes with Soft Information: A Survey

Multimedia transmission over time-varying wireless channels presents a number of challenges beyond existing capabilities conceived so far for third-generation networks. Efficient quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for multimedia on these channels may in particular require a loosening and a rethinking of the layer separation principle. In that context, joint source-channel decoding (JSCD) str...

. Soft source decoding with applications

Motivated by recent results in joint source-channel coding and decoding, we consider the problem of decoding of variable-length codes using soft channel values. We present results of decoding of selected codes using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoder and the sequential decoder, and show the performance gains over decoding using hard decisions alone. The objective behind this work is to prov...

The Turbo Principle in Joint Source Channel Decoding of Variable Length Codes

The ’turbo’ principle has been widely applied to various detection/decoding problems in recent years. Here we show how the general idea can be extended to a communication scheme where a variable length code is used for data compression followed by a channel code to protect the data against channel errors. Iterations are performed between the channel decoder and the decoder for the variable leng...

Joint Source and Channel Decoding for Variable Length Encoded Turbo Codes

Joint source and channel decoding (JSCD) has been proved to be an effective technique which can improve decoding performance by exploiting residual source redundancy. Most previous publications on this subject focus on a traditional coding scheme in which the source variable-length coding (VLC) is serially concatenated with a channel code. In this paper, a parallel concatenated coding scheme fo...

Robust transmission of variable-length encoded sources

Digital communications systems commonly use compression (source coding) and error control (channel coding) to allow efficient and robust transmission of data over noisy channels. When compression is imperfect, some residual redundancy remains in the transmitted data and can be exploited at the decoder to improve the decoder’s probability-of-error performance. A new approach to joint source-chan...
